Cruising Down the Nile - Piano Trio

This elem piano trio for one piano, 6 hands, is arranged from her piano solo w/vocals of the same title, ‘Cruising Down the Nile’. This work is in her ‘Noah’s Ark Series’ that introduces different music styles in a global setting. The animals of the specific regions are the lyrical guides, in this case the hippos and crocodiles. The music style is that of mid-eastern music and explores both harmonic and natural minors, using upper tetrachords of each. Sounds very exotic. Form is: intro A B A coda. In the trio piano 2 carries the melody, piano 1 performs counter melodies, and piano 3 performs rhythmic ostinati establishing tempo and key (s). Lots of fun!

Dinosaur Collection

Picture
A book of 4 character pieces in piano solo format. No lyrics. Late Elementary. Pieces in this collection chosen for contest lists by National Federation of Music Clubs and NC Music Teachers Association. From the terrifying march of 'Tyrannosaurus Rex' to the haunting melody of 'Pteranodon'; from the playful 'Stegosaurus' to the lumbering 'Brontosaurus' with  a  DRAMATIC coda of a sweeping 4-octave glissando; this series is sure to delight students, increase technique, and  fire their imaginations as they explore the entire piano.

  • "Tyrannosaurus Rex" Intro is an appropriate fanfare to announce king of all dinosaurs (at the time it was composed) on a hungry, terrifying, prowling march. In Cm, 4/4 meter - while LH is performing staccato march accomp., RH has melody in Cm 5-finger position. A2 section transfers to Fm and placement of the hands transfer. What fun the B section is w/hands performing open fifths beginning in middle of piano and s-t-e-t-c-h-i-n-g out to the "outer limits" of the piano in opposite directions using damper pedal and LOTS of dynamic shading!
  • "Pteranodon" was chosen by the NCMTA for 2020 in Jr. III A (Contemporary Composers), and then for the 2012-2013 contest list in the Jr. III A division!!
Someone recently told me they knew there had to be a story behind this piece - there is: I just added a page, "Pteranodon: The Real Story" if you would like to read it.
This haunting, lyrical piece is in a romantic rubato style - both hands in treble with RH playing melody in Em while LH arpeggiated chords’ bass notes descend chromatically, producing a very dramatic sound. Lots of artistry and expression learned here. ABA again w/B section soaring arpeggios depicting flight.
  • Brontosaurus" from this collection has been chosen by the National Federation of Music Clubs for inclusion in their bulletin 2016-2020 under "Piano Solos Elem. II".
It has also been selected by the NCMTA (North Carolina Music Teachers Association) for their 2012-2013 contest list in the Junior III A section.
It is lumbering along in 4/4 meter in key of C w/tonal explorations into Gb and Eb minors. Mostly in echoing open fifths w/melody divided between hands. In ABA coda form. At the coda, according to one of my students, Brontosaurus has to make a mad dash for the water because Tyrannosaurus Rex wants a bite of him. He dives into the water to escape expressed by a HUGE descending glissando.
  • "Stegosaurus" was chosen by NCMTA in 1998 and 2004.
Is taking a playful romp thru the pre-historic forest. Features lots of syncopation - in ABA form w/melody in RH on A section and LH on B section. B section very Latin sounding, like he is doing a little dance. Key of Cm going to sub-dominant (Fm) in B. In 4/4 meter.

Noah's Ark Series of Global Music

"Koala Lullaby" ("Kirian’s Lullaby") in key of G, Alberti bass used in LH. Both  hands in treble clef throughout and RH plays the single-note melody. Damper pedal is used and the soft pedal added to all of this gives it a music box effect. In ABA form, G major.
  • "Cruising Down the Nile" (molto mysterioso) elem piano solo w/lyrics in exotic mid-eastern style produced by R.H. melody playing around upper tetrachord of Gm harmonic scale emphasizing the augmented second of Eb and F#. LH plays broken open fifths establishing G tonality and the accomp. depicts camels plodding steadily across the desert. In 4/4 meter.

Noah's Ark Series of Global Music

  • "Iguana" a FUN tango naturally syncopated in the key of Dm. Form: intro AAB coda w/B section in subdominant key of Gm—VERY dramatic!! LH ostinato in typical tango style while RH carries melody in mostly single notes w/occasional additional harmony to ease the student into playing polyphony. Sassy tongue-in-cheek lyrics of a vegetarian iguana w/an attitude!
  • "Joey the Wallabee Kangaroo" a waltz in key of F and form is:  intro ABA coda. The B section is in Dm (relative minor) has a surprise coda. Uses accelerando and ritardando.
  • "Sam the Lamb" is the Celtic offering in the Noah's Ark Series - in strophic form in C w/four verses. Single-note melody in the RH and mock bagpipe accomp. in LH. Gaelic terms that are in the lyrics are explained that are sung in the lyrics (ex. fleece).
Designed to introduce students to different musical styles from around the globe, (global music), these elem. piano solos w/lyrics use animals from different locales to be the guides. "Iguana" teaches the tango style; "Koala Lullaby" the lullaby; "Sam the Lamb" the Celtic strophic style; "Joey the Wallabee Kangaroo" the waltz, and the animals of the Nile explore the mysteries of Ancient Egypt in the exotic Mid-Eastern style. Series makes great recital material.

"Lullaby for a Butterfly"

This intermediate piano solo begins using the contemporary sounds of major seventh chords, but segues into lush, romantic sounds in the B section. This section also introduces lovely, lyrical harmony of parallel thirds and parallel sixths form: intro A B A coda In key of G transposing to key of Ab upon recapitulation. In 6/8 time. Uses damper and soft pedals and, as in the Romantic style, lots of dynamic shading. Great recital piece!

"My Box of Paints" Series

  • "Yellow"  an elem. beginner piece in key of C beginning in A section with hands around Middle C (but not in true Middle C position) creating a hands-divided melody with a tiny bit of harmony hands together. To be played 'cheerfully'.
  • "Green" elem. beginner piano solo w/lyrics Rather a softly performed piece with nothing louder than mp since the color green symbolizes nature and tranquility. Form: intro ABA coda; in key of G; 3/4 time signature.
Because of the 8va the piece covers 2 octaves. Use of damper pedal.

  • "Purple" ' a great beginner piece; in key of F; form intro A B A coda: middle C position in the A sections, traveling all over the piano in B section using damper pedal. The student learns to build the F major triad one note at the time in the intro (repeated in the coda) to mimic a trumpet fanfare.
  • "Blue" This elem piano solo is built entirely on whole-tone (whole step) scales and clusters and could be taught by rote. The whole-tone scale is also called the hexatonic scale because it is comprised of 6 consecutive tones. Blue was created to be performed languidly in 6/4 with  liberal use of both damper and soft pedals. Based on the most-favored color globally,  it expresses musically the feeling of floating.
  • "Orange" SWINGING!!! late elementary or medium difficulty. One of the most-fun-to play solos w?lyrics I've ever created. Inspired by my granddaughters' love of the knock-knock jokes based on the phrases; 'Knock-knock, who's there? Orange-orange who? orange you glad you're... This is a rollicking piece with a swinging intro (repeated as bridge going into second A section) but segueing into a B section at a slower tempo and comprised completely of major sevenths! In key of G harmonic minor w/explorations into many different keys. In 4/4 time.
  • "Red" elementary solo depicting strength, energy, and power which this color represents.  strong, energetic, and powerful.  Form is intro A B A coda. Is in the key of C and 4/4 time signature. Use of clusters and triads in root position answering between hands.  To be performed BOLDLY.
